MPP Sandy Shaw tables motion to create Homes Ontario, a public agency to build affordable homes and create good jobs

QUEEN’S PARK — MPP Sandy Shaw (Hamilton West—Ancaster—Dundas) introduced a motion calling on the Ontario government to establish Homes Ontario, a new dedicated public agency with a mandate to tariff-proof Ontario’s housing market and deliver homes that are publicly built, permanently affordable homes, and made in Ontario.

“Housing is essential infrastructure,” said Shaw. “Ontario cannot grow, thrive, or compete if people can’t afford to live here. Homes Ontario is about getting the government back in the business of building housing—at scale, for the public good, and for the long haul.”

The motion urges the government to give Homes Ontario the tools it needs to:

  • Finance and deliver hundreds of thousands of permanently affordable homes
  • Leverage public land to fast-track development and ensure it serves public interest
  • Partner with non-profit, co-op, and supportive housing providers
  • Create good union jobs and strengthen Ontario’s skilled trades and building capacity

“When people have stable, affordable housing, they contribute more to the economy, their communities, and the workforce,” said Shaw. “This is a nation-building investment that will deliver economic renewal and lasting affordability.”

The Ontario NDP is calling on all parties to support the motion and take bold, public-led action to address the province’s worsening housing crisis.
